East Palo Alto police Capt. Jeff Liu said two men in hooded sweatshirts fired shots in the family car just before 1 a.m. Sunday.
The child, a three-month-old boy, suffered Liu is described as a "yellow injury". The baby died after being taken to Stanford Hospital.
His parents are in the same hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
No motive has been established to set, but investigators said the family was targeted.
Police have not released the names of the victims, but said the family lived in Redwood City.
